Demystifying and
re-storying the serpent

Why snakes deserve our attention and respect

On World Snake Day in the Year of the Snake, join Ngunnawal Knowledge Holder, Tyronne Bell, and local snake handler, researcher and conservationist, Dr Gavin Smith, for a special evening of snake yarning!

Snakes are among the most feared and misunderstood creatures in our
ecosystem, and those inhabiting urban areas live precariously as a result of how they are popularly represented and perceived.

To counterbalance the misunderstanding and hostility snakes are subject to, the pair will share different ways of understanding these beautiful creatures. Utilising distinct but complementary perspectives, they will identify pathways for the Canberra community to better understand and make space for snakes, as they are a vital and part of Ngunnawal ecosystems, landscapes and culture.

Tyronne Bell is a Ngunnawal descendant who grew up in Yass, learning traditional culture from his father Don Bell (senior). Tyronne’s passion for his Aboriginal culture, heritage and his desire to share this knowledge with others led to the establishment of Thunderstone in July 2013 to promote awareness of the rich Aboriginal culture and history of the local region. Thunderstone, along with other local Aboriginal businesses, Culture on the Move and Yurbay have conducted many Aboriginal cultural programs, activities and tours across Canberra in schools, childcare centres, government and non-government agencies, corporate and community organisations to .

Gavin Smith is an Associate Professor and the Head of Sociology at the Australian National University. He is also Director of ACT Snake Removals, a community snake conservation and education service. Gavin's research is increasingly focused on urban ecology, and he is particularly interested in the social and economic dimensions of the human—snake conflict, as well as the complex behavioural ecology of urban snakes. In 2021 he initiated the Canberra Snake Tracking Project, which is a longitudinal research study exploring eastern brown snake population dynamics and movement behaviours in a context of expanding habitat fragmentation, urban pressures and climate fluctuations.

TWILIGHT FLOW

Movement, Flow and Sound Immersion at Wildbark

*Kim’s sessions keep booking out weeks in advance so act quick!

With the stunning views of the Australian bush and Ngunnawal land as our backdrop, we invite you to a truly unique movement and sound immersion experience. Set in the main space of Wildbark, overlooking the breathtaking Mulligan’s Flat Nature Reserve, this session is designed to challenge, ground, and guide you on a transformative journey under the setting sun.

The Experience

We begin with a Yin and Yang flow led by our
experienced instructor, Kim. This dynamic practice blends the grounding energy
of Yin with the invigorating fire of Yang:

  • Start with gentle warm-up movements, progressing to energizing Yang sequences that challenge you to find your edge.

  • Transition into a slow flow with deep Yin stretches and grounding poses, helping you find stillness, release tension, and reconnect with your body.

As dusk settles, we move into a deeply relaxing sound immersion featuring crystal singing bowls and live music performed by talented local musicians, with the sunset over the reserve as our backdrop. Allow yourself to dive as deeply as you are open to, reaping the rewards of your efforts throughout the class.

  • Crystal singing bowls create vibrations that
resonate deeply within the body, promoting emotional, mental, and physical well-being.

  • Let the harmonious blend of music and the beauty of nature guide you into a state of profound relaxation and calm.

Once the class concludes, we invite you to connect with others over a selection of herbal teas, fresh fruit, and other light refreshments, enjoyed in the tranquil surroundings of the reserve as the sun sets.
